Erwin Fabián García López considers himself an intense learner of being human, an intense learner of life. He has advised officials and organizations on public policy in education for the past 15 years and plans to continue. He was advisor to the Office of Innovation in Education for the Secretary of Education in Bogotá, Colombia in the areas of public policy and education from January 2012 to January 5, 2016. He is the coordinator of the investigative research project on alternative education and "education without school" at the National University of Colombia (Universidad Nacional de Colombia). He and his colleagues have organized four international congresses (2009, 2010, 2011, 2014) in these fields, as well as five semester-long courses on these topics. He was member of the coordinating team for the International Week of Alternative Education (Semana Internacional de las Educaciones Alternativas) in Bogotá in 2015.

He promotes educational diversity and community family networks that support alternative education. He has been invited to give presentations on alternative education at universities and for organizations in Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, El Salvador, and Spain. He was a contributor to the educational documentary "La Educación Prohibida" and a part of the Red Latinoamericana de Educaciones Alternativas (REEVO).

García López holds a Master's degree in education from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He has two children, whom his family has educated outside of the traditional school since 2003.
